I Enjoy Being a Girl – Film screening & post-show Q&A

Screening with Post-Show Q&A with Director Hoo Fan Chon

This film is presented with the T Project in commemoration of International Transgender Day of Visibility.

This photo-video essay is part of an ongoing project “Anita & Ava – Photography as a Self-restorative Tool”, which looks at how two childhood friends explored their gender identity through photography, as they transitioned into adulthood.

Fan Chon originally found this series of photographic portraits of the late Ava Leong taken in the 1950s and 1960s in which she self-restored from an adolescent boy to a woman in an antique shop in Penang. After he got in touch with Ava’s surviving lifelong friend, Anita, the collection expanded and he carried out a series of interviews with Anita to gather background information on these photographs.

A compilation of audio clips of Anita’s voice is used as the foundation of this video essay and are juxtaposed with a selection of Ava and Anita’s photographic collection that reveals their journey of self-discovery through studio photography, Anita’s working experience as a school lab technician and her life on stage as a woman impersonator. These photographs symbolize a time when they, together with their peers from the transgender community, were allowed to explore their sense of self while contributing to a lively cosmopolitan artistic culture in Malaysia.

CLASS ACTS Afterparty Feb 17

This is the official afterparty for the CLASS ACTS screening.

These tickets are for the AFTERPARTY ONLY.

To catch the screening (it comes with free admission to the afterparty as well), get tickets HERE instead.

CLASS ACTS Afterparty

For one night only, we’re so excited to present the afterparty for the Class Act screening on 17 Feb Friday. It is also a chance to highlight the rich legacy of dance music history by diving into the roots of Disco and House through the decades that soundtracked our stomping ground at Zouk Jiak Kim. Nightlife and Club Culture in SG flourished because of Zouk and the DJs who nurtured the space and championed the music for Singaporeans to dance to 🙌

To kick off this party, we’re gathering some of the pioneer DJs at Zouk as a companion to your refresher (or discovery) of the biggest tunes that were rinsed within the hallowed halls at Zouk Jiak Kim during the 90s and 00s . This will be a great reunion of sorts, so we hope many of you will be able to drop by x

9 pm: Class Acts Film Screening
10.30 pm: Screening ends, and Afterparty begins (Guests to adjourn to Hall 5 for the party).

Afterparty lineup includes: DJ Aldrin, DJ Brendon P, DJ Jeremy Boon

Class Acts Afterparty is presented by The Projector & Bobby Luo

All tickets are non refundable*. Please find your own replacement if you are unable to make it !
*except if the event is cancelled

Class Acts is a feature-length documentary tracing the genesis of Singapore’s creative scene in the ’90s through intimate conversations with its pioneering personalities.

From Singapore’s ‘godfather of design’ and the frontman of Singapore’s first hardcore band Stompin’ Ground to the founder of one of Singapore’s earliest graffiti crews ZNC and the streetwear visionary behind 77th Street, these are the stories of icons and legends navigating unchartered paths, government regulations, and limited finances to make their mark on culture.

Controversial headlines, arrests, and measures to “clean up” backfired and further stoked the passion of individuals who took things into their own hands, opening the floodgates for a wave of independent design studios, self-published zines, and safe sanctuaries in the form of cultural landmarks The Substation and Zouk.

These are the stories of individuals who started creating with nothing, who push Singapore’s creative standards even today. The ones who went on to inspire a new generation of musicians, designers, and street artists.

Class Acts isn’t just a historical retelling of a time long past. It’s a documentation of their collective spirit that never wavered despite trying circumstances. Their voices were loud, and now it’s time for their stories to be heard.

TRIP 2023: I am just trying to say something true

After smashing her work computer in the office pantry in an uncharacteristic fit of rage, Risa is now sat in a room with Dr Robert, her newly acquired therapist. She cannot go back to how she was living before. Risa must look back on her own life to look forward. What caused her to end up at this exact spot?

Was it her Catholic ah ma whose funeral she skipped, her ex-girlfriend whom she loved deeply but broke up with, or her tendency to feel too much? Or maybe… something else entirely?

So instead, this is a story about distance: the spaces between people and places, the gaps between past and present; and about living in the gulf between what we know and what we feel.

First commissioned for the 2018 season of The Studios, Michelle Tan’s deeply intimate script explores the complexities of personal truth and emotional vulnerability.

A programme of TRIP—a platform to showcase work by early-career directors.

DJs and Performers

Born in an isolated community of Borneo Island in 1993 Wanton Witch is a DJ and producer with a hyper-sensitive connection and approach to sound through performance. Coming of age in the relative isolation of island life, it wasn’t until relocating to Bangkok that she was able to access the different communities of musical genres that she would later travel between. With an early taste for trap and hip hop, she began working in the deconstructed club and techno scene where she found her musical voice, beginning her DJ career in 2018. Wanton is also a cofounder and original member of Queer underground creative collective ‘Non Non Non’ that has become a Bangkok nightlife staple.

Part of the Asian diasporic scene, rEmPiT g0dDe$$ moves between worlds as easily as she slips between her two experimental electronic music projects, VIKTORIA and rEmPiT g0dDe$$. Spending her time between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, the producer, composer and DJ boldly ventures into the farthest, darkest recesses industrial club, whipping up missives from the underground. Ever restless, she also works as music editor of the Magazine for Young Girls, an independent title highlighting female talents from Asia and diaspora communities around the world, and hosts a bi-monthly radio show featuring Asian female musical artists from around the world.

Tikkoii is a Bali-based DJ blessing your ears with bass, experimental, club, and sometimes happy hardcore. She is the founder of KUNTI KLUB, queer collective event in Bali.

soyf§g is the dj moniker of visual artist Aki Hassan. They aim to play anything hard to get your hearts pumping. They appear on Clyde Built Radio bi-monthly, where they play banging tunes & share personal queer trans encounters in their life. They are a resident DJ and co-organiser in Bussy Temple, a queer party collective based in Singapore.

C2AC (he/him) is DJ from Singapore who engages in an omni-genre of spitting hot vogue chants to dark demented electronica while crafting the divergent velocities of house and ballroom, serving you a sensorial delite. He is a current member of the multidisciplinary collective, @pure.ever and has visual art practice at @rifqi.amirul.

Based between Shanghai and Singapore, Fabricant Fang is a DJ who’s known for their eclectic blend of pop, gabber, IDM and deep cuts. Always committed to creating the most diverse, genre-defying experiences with speed, intensity and violence of action.
