We Are Not The Enemy: The Practice of Advocacy in Singapore
Advocates and activists in Singapore contribute to policy discussions and positive change through a combination of deft manoeuvres and patient politics. Yet civil society is often unacknowledged, their skill and labour instead frequently misunderstood, even earning them the label of “troublemakers” or “enemies of the state.”
This collection of essays and interviews is a candid reflection on the intentions, beliefs and strategies behind the practice of advocacy across a spectrum of causes. The contributors come from varying backgrounds and include academics, artists, lawyers, journalists, non-profit and advocacy organisations, student and community organisers. They share practical insights into their aims and community-building work, and the tactics they employ to overcome obstacles, shedding light on how to navigate a city-state with shifting socio-political fault lines and out-of-bound markers.
With an introduction, “It is Time to Trim the Banyan Tree”, by Constance Singam, and a conclusion, “Their Struggle is Ours to Continue”, by Suraendher Kumarr.
N o Readgrets discussions are safe spaces to nurture conversations and connections over inspiring books and explorations beyond their pages.
This time, we are discussing the book We Are Not The Enemy: The Practice of Advocacy in Singapore. We’re thrilled to have several contributors join us at the session!

It encourages open conversations about sex, relationships, and intimacy while promoting respect, consent, and diversity. The goal of the show is to entertain the audience while fostering a welcoming environment where individuals can laugh, learn, and feel empowered about their own sexuality.

About Dance Therapy Singapore
“When you learn to use your body well, not only will you not injure yourself, but discover new ways to come alive and become joyful.” -Vincent Yong
When Vincent was in his late teens, he discovered the life-changing effects of dancing. It brought him back to how he had survived his childhood, filled with traumatic experiences from medical to domestic issues, through “rhythmic movements.” These movements were his innate way to unknowingly regulate stressors. (More of his background will be shared in classes.)
After winning a dance competition during his tertiary engineering education, Vincent followed his heart and pursued dance as a profession. However, he was met with scorn, dissuasion, mockery, and judgment. He was even questioned if he was gay!
All that from just wanting to dance… If you have ever wanted to do something different and live a different life but were laughed and mocked into being your old self again, PAUSE right here. You can redesign your life. You can choreograph a new way to think and feel by engaging with the resources that lie inside of you.

About the Organisers
Shai and Dr Martha Tara Lee have teamed up with a shared vision of fostering open and positive conversations about sexuality.
Shaiful Risan is a prominent advocate of the DIY ethic and one of the very few stand up comics in Singapore who come from punkrock.
Noted for his commitment to ground-up inclusivity through Interdependence he has a storied history of speaking out against discrimination without harbouring a victim mindset.
Anti racist, anti sexist and anti homophobia while also not rejecting gentlemanly masculinity, this is one maverick project worthy of notice.
Meanwhile, Dr. Martha Tara Lee, as a relationship counselor and clinical sexologist with 15 years of experience, advocates for understanding and acceptance of diverse sexualorientations and gender identities.
Our collaboration is fueled by a common goal of breaking down barriers and creating a safe space to discuss sexualityin all its facets.
By combining Shaiful’s dedication to promoting peace, humanity and Interdependence alongside my expertise in relationships and sexuality, we aim to establish a platform that encourages respectful dialogue, champions consent, and embraces diversity through dialogue and deliberating social standards without jumping on the cancel culture bandwagon.
Together, we are dedicated to challenging societal norms, empowering individuals to embrace their sexuality, and working towards a more inclusive and sex-positive world for all.
